Family Promise

Family Promise is an organization which helps homeless families in
crisis. As a host church, First United Methodist Church provides
shelter and food for one week at a time on a rotational basis. If
you have never volunteered with Family Promise and would like more
information please contact Katie. There is a job for everyone
during a host week. You do not need to be an expert to serve. Below
are the different volunteer opportunities. Please consider one or
more of these ways of helping. Thank you!
Evening Meal Providers

Time Frame:
5:45-7:00 p.m. Food should be ready to serve at 6:00 p.m. Food can
be cooked at home or at church if need be.

Job
Description:
o
Volunteers will prepare a complete evening meal for 10-16 people
depending on how many people we are hosting. Simple meals are the
best and it is always easier if 2-3 people take an evening.
o
Food
should be ready to serve at 6:00 p.m. Evening Meal providers are
also asked to serve the meal.
o
Drinks, plates, silverware, napkins, and cups will be provided by
church. These items can all be found on the silver counter in the
center of the kitchen labeled “Family Promise.” Drinks are in the
refrigerator labeled.

Evening Hosts

Time Frame:
5:00-7:00 p.m.

Description:
o
Just
like you would host guests in your own home an evening host for
Family Promise makes the families feel welcome and comfortable
o
Evening volunteers should greet guests, help set up for dinner meal,
supervise dinner and clean up, and set up lunch preparation area for
guests to prepare next days lunch. 1-2 evening host are ideal.
o
Items
for families to prepare lunch with are labeled in the refrigerator
and on the counter (bread, lunch meat, cheese, drinks, chips, Ziploc
bags, fruit, etc…)

Overnight Hosts
·
Time Frame:
7:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m.
·
Job
Description:
o
Volunteers to assist guests as needed. 2 hosts are needed for each
night.
o
Please
make sure building is locked in the evening
o
Be on
call for guests during the night should an emergency or questions
arise.
o
Guests
should be awakened in time to prepare their breakfast, get dressed,
and go to work, day care, school, or to meet with Mindy.
o
Set up
a continental breakfast (hosts do not have to provide items for the
breakfast, they are already at the church) for the guests to help
themselves (6:15-7:00). Items for breakfast can be found in the
refrigerator and on the silver counter labeled “Family Promise”.
Toaster and coffee pot are in the kitchen as well.

Day Hosts

Time Frame:
2-3 hour shifts on either Sunday or Saturday
·
Job
Description:
o
Be on
call at the church for families during Sunday and Saturday of the
host week. 1-2 persons needed per shift)
o
Hosts
will stay in the Family Promise area and let guests in and out as
needed. Guests will typically run errands or spend time as a family
on these days. Some guests may have to go to work.

Set-up

Time Frame:
Sunday, 12:15-1:15 p.m.

Description:
Set-up guest’s rooms, unload vans, set up food in refrigerator and
kitchen for the week. .(3-5 people needed)

Clean up

Time Frame:
Sunday 12:15-1:15 p.m.

Job
Description:
Help pack up Family Promise vans and truck to transport families to
the next location. For those that are able help drive vehicles to
the next church. .(3-5 people needed)
